In a city nestled on the banks of the Ohio River, Frank Miller of Frank Miller and Son Sporting Goods has been serving the Owensboro community for more than 55 years.

Frank started his career selling copy machines as a traveling salesman. He quickly figured out he liked selling but did not care for traveling. His friend suggested he do something with his life that incorporated his passion of hunting and fishing.

Frank bought a bait business across the street from his current location from a couple that was retiring. At that time, the business solely focused on fishing.

Within three years, the business moved to their current location, expanded to include hunting, shooting and archery and is still thriving 52 years later.

“I know when someone walks in this store they need something and I am not bothering them,” said Frank.

Frank Miller and Son Sporting Goods offer several unique services. They zero guns and rifles for customers and also set up their bow and arrows. And for a little special touch, every child that comes in the store leaves with a piece of bubble gum.

Frank explained “I love the people I get to meet while doing what I love to do.”

It is important to Frank and his son, Chris, to provide an opportunity for high school students.

“We employee 2 high school students at a time. This position not only pays an hourly wage, but the student has the opportunity to earn a 2% sales commission on what they sell,” said Frank. “This teaches them how to run a retail business and how to interact with customers; lessons they can certainly use the rest of their lives.”

As to giving back to the community, Frank Miller & Son Sporting Goods is proud to donate bait for the Take a Kid Fishing events and to the local schools that take their students fishing.

“Many of these kids are fishing for the first time,” said Frank.

Frank Miller and Son Sporting Goods has been a KRF member since 1997 and participates in the workers comp program.

“The Kentucky Retail Federation definitely keeps us informed with legislation. I would tell other retailers KRF has been a benefit to us and our business,” said Frank.
